Participation is the key
Prior to visiting a foreign county I alway learn to ask where the bathroom is, say thank you, say hello, say good bye and count from one to ten. While that does not make me a linguist it does enable me to participate with the locals and it shows them I took the effort to learn a little about them. By the same token in Bali if you choose to stay in one of the Bali villas you will be getting one step closer to the culture. Hotels can be so sterile and isolate you from getting to know the people.
